Dim light streams down from the ceiling; the rubble on the side walls glistens with moisture. Every now and then, drops of water splash into small puddles at the edge of the asphalt path. Not a sound penetrates the dimly lit tunnel: the Kückelheim Tunnel, 689 meters long, is the highlight of the “SauerlandRadring.”
Ornithologists are thrilled by the bearded bat, the greater mouse-eared bat, the Daubenton’s bat, and the brown long-eared bat, all of which have already been spotted there. These animals also inspired the bike path’s route marker: a white cyclist against the red silhouette of a bat.
For nature conservation reasons, the Kückelheim Tunnel (“Bat Tunnel”) is closed from November 1 through April 4 at the latest.
For cyclists coming from Eslohe, the following winter detour is recommended during the closure period: Eslohe – Niedersalwey – Obersalwey – Schliprüthen – Fehrenbracht.
If you’re coming from the direction of Finnentrop-Serkenrode, the following winter detour is recommended: Fehrenbracht – Schliprüthen – Obersalwey – Niedersalwey – Eslohe.
