Cycling Trip: SauerlandRadring—A Relaxing Ride on Two Wheels

Sauerland Cycling Loop / Trip Planning / Flat Rates / Cycling Trip: SauerlandRadring—A Relaxing Ride on Two Wheels

In the heart of the Sauerland, you’ll ride along former railroad tracks through picturesque landscapes and charming towns with almost no hills—including a ride through the nearly 700-meter-long Fledermaustunnel. Along the way, you’ll discover exciting highlights such as the DampfLandLeute Museum, Lake Hennesee, and the Sauerland Pyramids.

Itinerary:

Day 1 – Travel to Finnentrop, Stage: Finnentrop – Wenholthausen (37 km)
Start in Finnentrop and follow the well-signposted SauerlandRadring along old railroad tracks. The highlight of this stage is the approximately 700-meter-long Fledermaustunnel with its very special atmosphere. In winter, the tunnel is closed due to nesting bats—a detour is signposted. After Eslohe, you’ll turn onto the HenneseeSchleife and reach your destination for the day, the charming town of Wenholthausen, which offers plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat.

Day 2: Wenholthausen–Fleckenberg Stage (56 km)

The longest stage of the tour takes you through the idyllic Wennetal valley to Meschede—the perfect place for a break and a quick snack in the pedestrian zone. From there, the route continues over the Hennesee Dam and then follows the car-free lakeshore, offering views of the reservoir along the way. Via Reiste and Bremke, you’ll return from the Hennesee Loop to the SauerlandRadring toward Schmallenberg. In Schmallenberg, there are plenty of places to stop for a break before you reach your stage destination, Fleckenberg.

Day 3: Fleckenberg – Finnentrop (30 km)
The final stage is mostly a gentle descent through the picturesque Lenne Valley to the tour’s starting point in Finnentrop. Along the way, it’s worth stopping at the Lenne Bicycle Church, the TalVital in Saalhausen—which features Kneipp and spa facilities and plenty of space for a leisurely break—or the Sauerland Pyramids with Galileo Park and informative exhibitions. Back in Finnentrop, your loop tour ends—return by train or car.

Good to know:
The route is mostly paved or well-graveled and generally has gentle inclines—ideal even without an e-bike. Rental e-bikes are available by reservation through Schmallenberger Sauerland Tourismus; if you’re bringing your own e-bike, please don’t forget the charger.
