A diagonal layering can be seen in the sandstone. The sand layers do not lie horizontally on top of each other, but at a certain angle. This type of structure is created by the flow when a sediment is deposited by wind or water. The "Older Frankenberg Conglomerate", a rounded, consolidated gravel material, follows above the Rotliegend sandstone. It serves as a so-called type locality, as it is present here in a typical formation and can therefore be used for comparisons with other localities. At the Ederklippe, the conglomerate interlocks with marly and clayey rocks of the Zechstein (Upper Permian). The components of the "Battenberg Formation" were formed as erosion debris that was removed from the Variscan Mountains and transported to its foreland.
Age of the rocks: Battenberg Formation: boundary Rotliegend to Zechstein, Permian (approx. 270 million years before today)
