First mentioned in 1031, the estate was owned by Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn and became part of the municipality of Bökenförde in the 16th century. Under the direction of the von Hörde dynasty and with plans by master builder Kitz, the castle was transformed into a magnificent Baroque building between 1765 and 1768. Italian stucco masters refined the interior, while the orangery in rococo style and the richly decorated chapel with its impressive altar are particular highlights.
After a fire in 1935, the castle was reconstructed with great attention to detail. It has been privately owned by Dr. Otto Drosihn since 1998. It is therefore not open to the public, but from a distance it is a magical place to marvel at.
Schwarzenraben Castle is an attractive destination for cycle tours around Lippstadt and promises not only insights into history but also a wonderful backdrop for relaxing hours.
