Accidental find with great significance
During accidental construction work in a Lippstadt printing works in 1981, a real surprise was discovered: a well-preserved medieval stonework. This unexpected find proved to be of great importance for the history of Lippstadt. The massive building, which stands out due to its thick walls and square shape, was placed under a preservation order and lovingly restored.
Unique construction and versatile use
The Old Stoneworks is an impressive example of medieval architecture. Its massive, up to 1 meter thick walls made of quarry stone and its almost square basic shape were typical of stone buildings of the time. Such buildings were often used as secure storage facilities for goods or as a refuge for nobles and wealthy citizens. The Lippstadt stonework was also attached to a front building and offered protection from attacks and fires.
Restoration and new purpose
Following its discovery, the stonework was extensively restored. Particular attention was paid to preserving the historic building fabric. Today, the building houses the town archive with a beautiful reading room and is also used for events. The impressive vine painting on the ceiling, which dates back to the 17th century, is a particular highlight and testifies to the artistic creativity of the time.
Visitors can view the archive material, unless data protection regulations or restoration reasons prevent this, and use the extensive reference library with around 10,000 volumes. Plan your visit now to discover Lippstadt's hidden gem!
